What would happen if, instead of always trying to change the body, we became curious about what it was already telling us?
We spend much of our lives overriding physical signals. We keep going when we’re tired. We tense without noticing. We become so accustomed to certain ways of holding ourselves that they simply become normal.
Spinal Energetics offers a different approach.
Rather than forcing or manipulating the body, it invites awareness—holding space for the body to respond in its own way.
What Is Spinal Energetics?
Spinal Energetics is a body-based modality developed by Australian chiropractor and counsellor Dr Sarah Jane.
Drawing upon both Eastern and Western philosophies, it explores the relationship between the spine, nervous system, body and energetic field.
A practitioner may use gentle touch around different areas of the body as well as hands-off techniques.
The intention isn’t to physically create a particular movement or response.
Instead, the practitioner observes, responds and holds space for the individual’s experience.
What Happens During a Session?
Spinal Energetics is generally experienced fully clothed while lying comfortably on a treatment table.
And this is where everyone’s experience can begin to look different.
Some people remain relatively still.
Others may experience spontaneous movements such as stretching, twisting, arching or gentle shaking.
You might become aware of changes in breathing, warmth, tingling or other physical sensations.
Or perhaps you’ll simply feel deeply relaxed.
There isn’t a particular response you’re supposed to have.
The Body Doesn’t Need to Perform
Videos of Spinal Energetics can sometimes show significant physical movement, so it’s easy to assume that this is what a successful session is supposed to look like.
It isn’t.
More movement doesn’t mean a better session.
Stillness doesn’t mean nothing is happening.
Part of the philosophy behind the practice is allowing the individual’s response to be exactly that—individual.
You don’t need to make something happen.
What Does “Holding Space” Mean?
Holding space means creating and maintaining a supportive environment for another person’s experience.
The practitioner remains present and attentive without forcing an outcome or deciding what the experience should look like.
It’s a subtle but important distinction.
You aren’t being asked to perform for the practitioner.
And the practitioner isn’t trying to make your body behave in a particular way.
There is room for noticing, responding and choice.
Feeling Safe in Your Body
This is a phrase you may hear at Soul Recovery Service.
Feeling safe in your body doesn’t mean never experiencing discomfort or difficult emotions.
It can be much simpler.
Knowing you have choices.
Feeling able to communicate what you need.
Noticing your breath.
Recognising tension.
Becoming comfortable enough to be still.
Allowing yourself to notice a sensation without immediately needing to fix it.
In this sense, safety is closely connected with awareness, choice and having your boundaries respected.
Curiosity Instead of Expectation
Perhaps one of the most useful ways to approach Spinal Energetics is without deciding beforehand what should happen.
You don’t need to arrive seeking a dramatic experience.
You don’t need to understand every aspect of the modality.
And you certainly don’t need to move like someone you saw online.
You can simply arrive with curiosity.
At Soul Recovery Service in Wauchope, Joel Mervyn-Jones offers Spinal Energetics as one of several pathways for exploring body awareness, connection and the experience of feeling safe within your body.
Where the body remembers how to heal.
Spinal Energetics is a complementary wellbeing practice and isn’t a substitute for medical or psychological care. The modality has specific contraindications, so suitability should be discussed before booking.
