Let the Body Move as It Needs To
When was the last time you moved simply because it felt good? Not to exercise. Not to perform. Just because the music was playing and your body wanted to respond.
Ecstatic Dance at Soul Recovery Service in Wauchope is an invitation to experience movement differently. There is no choreography to remember and no particular way your movement needs to look. The music provides the journey.
What Is Ecstatic Dance?
Ecstatic Dance is a free-form movement practice where music guides the experience rather than a prescribed dance routine. You are invited to listen to the music and allow your body to respond in whatever way feels natural. That might mean moving energetically around the room. It might mean swaying, stretching, shaking, turning or exploring movements you’ve never made before.
Sometimes it might mean becoming very still.
The point is not to produce a particular kind of dance, but to experience movement from within. Learn to feel safe in your body.
“But I Can’t Dance”
You don’t need to know how to dance. Ecstatic Dance isn’t about dance technique, remembering steps or demonstrating that you have rhythm. There is no routine you can get wrong, and this can be deeply freeing.
Many of us become self-conscious about movement as we grow older, learning to focus on how we look from the outside rather than how movement actually feels. Ecstatic Dance offers an opportunity to become mindful and curious about the way movement feels.
Feeling Safe in Your Body
For some people, moving freely comes easily. For others, particularly in a room with other people, it can initially feel vulnerable or unfamiliar. Feeling safe in your body doesn’t mean you need to become completely uninhibited – it means you have choices.
You can move more. You can move less. You can take your time. Pay attention to your experience and notice what feels comfortable. Respect your own boundaries and decide how you participate.
Soul Recovery Service holds space for the group experience without prescribing how your individual experience should unfold.
Expression Without Performance
Most forms of dance have an external focus centred around the way movement looks. Ecstatic Dance turns the attention inward. Movement becomes a form of expression rather than performance.
You can simply move.
Music as a Journey
Music shapes the Ecstatic Dance experience. Changes in rhythm, tempo, intensity and mood can invite different qualities of movement as the session unfolds. Rather than telling you how to respond to those changes, the music provides something for your body to meet.
There is no correct interpretation – your experience belongs to you.
Movement, Embodiment and Connection
Experience yourself through your body rather than only your thoughts. Feeling your feet against the floor, noticing your breath and feeling your weight shift as you move. Ecstatic Dance gives those sensations somewhere to go, inviting you out of your head and into the physical experience of movement.
Moving Together, Experiencing Individually
Ecstatic Dance is personal, but it doesn’t happen in isolation. There can be something powerful about sharing a room with other people who have also given themselves permission to move without worrying about perfection.
You don’t need to interact with everyone or even be particularly social. You can have your own experience while still being part of something shared. Ecstatic Dance allows for a combination of individuality and connection.
What Do I Need to Bring?
Bring yourself, as you are, and wear something comfortable that allows you to move freely.
Ecstatic Dance at Soul Recovery Service
Movement is one of the pathways explored at Soul Recovery Service, as well body awareness, sound, vibration and light. Group experiences add another dimension – connection through shared movement, rhythm and presence.
Ecstatic Dance brings together many of the concepts we focus on in our practice – music, breath, movement, expression, embodiment, connection, and encouraging the body to move as it needs to.
Helping the body remember how to heal.
